The asset
An independent, Trinidad-focused operator flagged advanced external corrosion on the conductor casing of an abandoned well. The damage sat in the splash zone, driven by decades of tidal cycling and salt spray.
What was failing
The corrosion had gone through-wall, exposing the inner casing string. That left a risk of seepage and of collapse at the corrosion site, and the wet-dry cycle was driving further wall loss at every tide.
The conventional answers fit badly. Welding on a wellhead with residual hydrocarbons carries spark risk, and a full intervention is hard to justify on an asset already abandoned. The job called for a repair that was engineered, permanent, and cold.
Three stages, all cold-applied
- Cold-bonded plates. Two rolled steel plates, formed to the conductor and bonded over the damage zone with Belzona 7311. No welding, no spark risk, no heat into steel that was already thinned.
- Sealed perimeter. Belzona 1111 capped the plate edges and seams, closing every path for further moisture ingress.
- Structural encapsulation. The full repair was wrapped in Belzona SuperWrap II, a carbon fiber composite system qualified to ASME PCC-2 Article 4.1 and rated for permanent splash-zone exposure. ASME PCC-2 is the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ standard for the repair of pressure equipment and piping.
Each stage had one job: the plates restored the barrier, the seal closed the moisture path, and the wrap carries the structural load.
The outcome
The conductor casing was fully repaired, with no leaking. No hot work was performed and the well was never re-entered. From scoping to execution the job took roughly a week, and the repair itself took one day on the tools. The asset was painted and handed back in like-new condition.

Why it matters
For steel in the splash zone, the real choice is rarely repair versus replacement. It is an engineered repair now, or a larger problem later. Cold-applied systems, properly specified and properly applied, restore integrity without hot-work permits and without touching the well. On a producing asset, the same approach spares the shutdown a replacement would force. If an asset of yours is corroding in the splash zone, we would be glad to look at it.
