A stamp is a declaration, not a formality
Recertification is often treated as an administrative step, a stamp obtained to keep an auditor satisfied. That description understates what the document is for. A certificate declares something specific. A qualified person examined this equipment against its real service conditions. On that examination, it is fit for the next interval. Where the examination was shallow, the paperwork misleads. The asset is then trusted on an assurance nobody actually checked.
Why iron fails later, not at certification
Flow iron, hammer unions and swivels rarely fail at the point of certification. They fail afterwards, in service, under loads and cycles the certificate presumed they could sustain. Between certificates the component’s real history builds up: pressure cycles, erosion, handling damage, field repairs. An examination that ignores that history is measuring the wrong thing.
What a proper examination covers
The component is identified, traced, and stripped. It is inspected against its actual load and service history, never a generic checklist. A pressure test against its rating follows. The component then comes back with a written record of what was examined and what was found. If a component should not return to service, the record says so plainly. An examination that cannot produce that sentence was not an examination.
Recertification runs on the asset’s clock
The interval on a certificate is a maximum, not a schedule to coast to. Iron that has run hard, been repaired, or changed duty has earned an earlier look. The condition of the equipment sets the clock. The paperwork should follow it, never the other way around.
Worth resolving before the next job
If iron in your fleet is due, resolve it before the equipment works again. The same applies if its last examination told you less than you needed to know. Ours happen in-country, and the findings arrive in writing. The value, as ever, lies in the examination.
