The repair-or-replace question
On mature equipment the reflex is to cut out the damaged section and weld in new metal. That works, but it brings hot-work permits, shutdown time, and risk to surrounding steel that is already thinned. For a lot of assets still inside their service window, the question is narrower. Can we restore the surface and the seal without putting heat into the part?
The honest answer depends on what has actually failed. A coating that has worn through is a different problem from a section that has lost load-bearing wall. We separate the two before anyone reaches for a torch.
Where a cold-applied repair fits
Polymeric coatings and composite wraps earn their place where the base metal is sound. The surface or the containment has degraded; the structure has not. Think eroded pump internals, corroded flange faces, or wall loss in the splash zone. Applied in place, they avoid hot work and let the asset stay in line. The system is chosen for the job: metal-repair compounds, elastomers, coatings and linings, or structural wraps. On a recent conductor repair in the splash zone, that meant a composite system qualified to ASME PCC-2. That standard, from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, governs the repair of pressure equipment and piping.
Where it does not
A cold-applied repair is not a fix for structural cracking or for a duty that has outgrown the original design. Part of doing this well is saying plainly when a repair is the wrong call. We will say it.
The economics are rarely what the quotation says
A component chosen on price alone often fails within a year and must be replaced. Once lost production is counted, it was rarely the economical choice. The same arithmetic governs repair decisions. The cheapest quotation and the cheapest outcome are not the same number. What separates them is paid in unplanned downtime. A repair that restores the asset to specification, tested and documented, is often the cheaper outcome. That holds even when it is not the cheaper line item. Sometimes replacement wins that same arithmetic. The point is to run it honestly before committing to either.
How we make the call
We do not price repairs from photographs. The component comes to our facility, or we survey it in place where it cannot move. We establish what has actually failed and separate surface degradation from structural loss. The findings go into a written technical report. Its recommendation is repair, with a defined scope and cost, or replacement, with the reasons stated. The decision stays with you.
The question worth asking early
The worst time to weigh repair against replacement is after the purchase order is raised. If a component in your operation is sitting on that borderline, start with an honest assessment of what actually failed. We would be glad to provide it.
